Abstract

‘Conference of the Birds’ shows an outtake from an analysis of the correlation between time and place and of the historical Iranian landscape. How do places appear and disappear? How do we attach meaning to a certain site and in what way photography can deal with deconstructed icons in comparison to the (a-)historical palm tree sticking out its tongue? A small desert village has been photographed obsessively and captured from every angle possible. Elements are positioned in the frame so that they are repeated in the next. The photographs move in closely to the landscape of a palm tree village. The village is small and serene. Palm trees appear all over the place, they are burned, bend, dry and dead. They resemble pillars and artefacts that are left behind on various historical sites and they can be associated with land art installations.

Abstract

Dumitru is a project started in 2015. The corpus of images that composes it comes mainly from archives relating to the period of the reign of the Ceaucescu dictatorship in Romania (1974/1989). Missed Utopias, lost dreams, technologies that have become obsolete ... For four years, I drew on these images, scrutinized and enlarged their surfaces, revisited places by making new shots, trying out new assemblies, such as a montage game, until evidence emerges. The book is a posthumous tribute to Dumitru Bedeleu who had meticulously kept these documents and without whom I could not have realized it. This was for me a starting point, to experiment with new data and come to hinder the purely documentary nature of photography. The book was thought as simply and radically as possible. The double pages combine the principles of echo and telescoping. No binding, no cover. The pages can be organized in a different order, it is possible to fold them or pin them on the wall ... All the writings are grouped on a red card in the center of the book. The color used is symbolic at this time, the cardboard overflows of one centimeter on two sides, which makes it apparent when the book is closed. The paper used gives a sensation and touch close to these period newspapers.

Abstract

Abstract

Arnaud Brihay constantly hires planes for his professional activities, which lead him to numerous countries. Upon his return to Lyon, he continues to move, but on another level, going from place to place – often anchors of his life and his sociability. From time to time he returns to his native Belgium. He thereby composes a lived geography, which articulates and accentuates on places, lines of motion, connections. His existence is transitory and traversing, in the sense that he passes through places, to reach other places, without settling in for long: is it this instability of domicile as a neo-nomad what has driven him for some years now to photograph fleeting moments, shadows, atmospheres? All of this, captured in motion, reveals the fragile pieces of a wandering and a little melancholic life, marked by a sort of Saudade of the contemporary mobile individual – a nostalgia for what one leaves behind with every departure: loved ones or friends, waiting for a new get-together, places, landscapes, to which Arnaud is so attached, that he consecrated to them several series, before his photography grew apart from the fixed forms and concentrated on the impression of passage. Abstract

The starting point of White Shadows by Winne Lievens were her grandmother’s memories of the Belgian Congo. At the age of 19, she moved to Congo to work as a teacher, and ended up meeting her husband and raising their five children there. When Congo became too unsafe, the family returned to Belgium. But the nostalgia for Africa remained great. Winne’s grandmother described her time in Congo as the most beautiful time of her life. As a child, Winne Lievens used to be fascinated by her grandmother’s TV room, where countless objects and photographs kept the memory of Congo alive. It was in this TV room that Winne first came into contact with this distant and exotic past. Now, as an adult, she considers this past from a different perspective, one in which also the social vision of a colonial past has its place. In White Shadows both that naive, childlike gaze and the adult, informed gaze are represented. This book was created for the occasion of the exhibition with the same title in Arrière-pensée, Ghent.

Abstract

The production of Punk Graffiti Archives: The Netherlands involved months of research into several private archives, including the two largest existing archives of punk graffiti related documentation – the Diana Ozon Archive and the archive of the Dutch Graffiti Library. The book features several newspaper and fanzine clippings from the era translated into English.Punk Graffiti Archives: The Netherlands was published as a companion to the 2018 Unlock Book Fair, together with its twin volume, Punk Graffiti Archives: Madrid. The fair took place in Amsterdam in December 8-9 under the topic “punk and graffiti”.

Abstract

In the autumn of 2019 I photographed fungi in Dudenpark, Brussels. Fungi are the oldest living species on our planet. They build and spread their communities across human borders, continents, laws ... They take over land without asking permission. They clean up toxic messes in disturbed landscapes and shake the land back to life to create livable grounds for animals, plants and maybe humans. They have the power to transport energy between weaker and stronger trees, to keep forests alive or to kill them. Their spores are invisible and spread and spread and spread. “The uncontrolled lives of mushrooms are a gift — and a guide — when the controlled world we thought we had fails.”The project consists of an installation and a publication. The accrochage shows a number of blow-ups of marcro-photographed fungi. The prints will appear and disappear according to the temperature in the room. Two heating systems are installed under the works to provide change. By a timing system the heaters will go on and off. The viewer will not be able to control what he sees. Each hour the images will be different showing and hiding parts of the work. The (un) natural process of appearance is accompanied by the responsibility, care and patience of the spectator.
